The Metropolitan Knoxville Airport Authority (MKAA) recently upgraded the concourse exit by replacing the revolving door with a new twin tunnel exit lane system in order to meet existing and future passenger throughput while maintaining required security capabilities and existing staffing levels.
At peak travel times, the revolving door would cause a significant delay and slow down travelers’ ability to quickly exit the concourse.
With this new two-door system, approximately 5,200 passengers can be processed through the exit per hour, as opposed to 540 passengers an hour with the revolving door.
This new installation is just one of many capital improvements the MKAA is implementing at McGhee Tyson Airport over the next few years. Stay tuned for more information on the parking garage expansion project (estimated completion of 2026) and the terminal gate expansion project (estimated completion of 2028).
