Tips for Summer Travel at TYS

McGhee Tyson Airport is expecting higher than normal passenger traffic due to Memorial Day travel starting Friday, May 23, 2025, continuing throughout the summer.  With an increased number of travelers in the airport, it is important to use the following tips when traveling during those dates:

  • Be sure to download your airline’s app for current flight information and to secure your mobile boarding pass to reduce the time you spend in the security checkpoint line.
  • Allow yourself more time when arriving at the airport. For domestic flights, please arrive at least 2 hours prior to your departure time and at least 2 1/2 hours before an international departure time.
  • When more people travel, there is a higher demand for airport parking. Some airport parking lots require a short walk to the terminal or a shuttle ride. Please account for the additional time it will take to get to the airport from the parking lot. Arrive early enough to ensure you have enough time to find a parking space and check in for your flight.
  • TSA is enforcing the use of REAL ID or another form of acceptable identification. For a list approved identification, visit https://www.tsa.gov/travel/security-screening/identification.
  • When picking someone up at the airport, the curbside is only for pick-ups and drop-offs, and parking at or near the curb is not allowed. Instead, consider using the Phone & Wait Lot. It’s a FREE parking area where you can wait in your car until your guest has their luggage and is ready to meet you on the lower level. This lot helps reduce traffic and minimizes the need to circle the airport while waiting to pick up your passenger.
