We’re excited to share that construction has officially begun on our Escalator Replacement Project at McGhee Tyson Airport (TYS)!
This project is part of our ongoing commitment to maintain and modernize airport facilities for the millions of passengers who travel through TYS each year. Both escalators in the terminal are being replaced, and the project is expected to be complete by December.
What to Expect During Construction
During this time, one or both escalators may be closed as work progresses. We understand this may cause minor inconveniences, so here are a few tips to help you navigate the terminal with ease:
- Stairs: Staircases are located on either side of the terminal building.
- Elevators: Elevators are available inside the terminal and in the parking garage for those who prefer or require step-free access.
- Accessibility Tip: If you’re traveling with large luggage or need wheelchair assistance, we recommend entering the terminal on the second floor (Departures Level), where airline ticket counters are located.
Why This Upgrade Matters
Our current escalators have been in service since 2001 — faithfully moving more than 25 million passengers over the past two decades. While they’ve served us well, it’s time for an upgrade that ensures a smoother, more reliable experience for our travelers in the years ahead.
Thank You for Your Patience
We know this project has been a long time coming, and we appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to enhance your airport experience.
Our goal is always to make travel through TYS as comfortable, safe, and efficient as possible — and we can’t wait to unveil the new escalators later this year!
