One of the Single Largest Air Service Announcements in TYS History

KNOXVILLE (January 14, 2020)  — McGhee Tyson Airport is celebrating an air service milestone today with the announcement of five new seasonal destinations on Allegiant Air, making it one of the airport’s single largest air service announcements in its 83-year history.  With flights to popular destinations like Austin, Boston, Chicago, Houston and Myrtle Beach, East Tennessee travelers will have the option to access vibrant, metropolitan areas, lose themselves in the eclectic environment of one of the country’s fastest growing cities, or sink their toes in the sand at one of the most well-known beach towns.

“The Board of Commissioners and staff at the MKAA are continually working to recruit new low-fare airlines and flights to McGhee Tyson Airport,” said Eddie Mannis, Chairman of the Metropolitan Knoxville Airport Authority. “Investments like the one that Allegiant Air announced today do not happen overnight. They are the culmination of Allegiant Air’s belief in our market, the strong business case our staff presents to the airline, and the community’s continued support of Allegiant Air.”

In the past year, the airport authority staff has been successful in recruiting seven new destinations on Allegiant Air, two new destinations on American Airlines, larger American Airlines’ aircraft to select market, and an upgrade of new aircraft on United Airlines.  All of these efforts provide more flexibility in travel planning for the region’s travelers and more opportunities to attract visitors to our vibrant communities in East Tennessee.

“We are thankful that Allegiant has made such a strong commitment to our community,” said Mannis. “We are grateful for their commitment and we will continuously strive to bring quality low-fare air service to our region.”
