Insider Information

The goal of this website is to keep airport employees informed on what's going on at the airport and how it will impact passengers and employees. We will also be updating this site with upcoming airport employee events and other ways you can get involved in airport activities.

For the past 12 months, McGhee Tyson Airport has seen historic passenger growth, adding over 340,000 passengers in the past year alone. In 2023, McGhee Tyson Airport served a record-breaking 2.8+ million passengers, and we're already on target to exceed that number in 2024.

This exponential growth attracts new airlines and air service to our market. It also demands that the airport make operational changes in parking, airside operations, and passenger amenities to best accommodate current and future airport guests.
You can read more about both of those topics below.

UP AND COMING AIR SERVICE

In the next two months, the airport will grow even more when it welcomes Avelo Airlines in May and seven new daily flights for Allegiant Air (BLV, JAX, MCO, SBN), Delta Air Lines (MSP), and Frontier Airlines (PHL). In addition, American Airlines and United Airlines are planning to bring in larger aircraft this summer to help meet the travel needs of our growing region. To put this growth in perspective, this July, McGhee Tyson Airport expects to see nearly 40% more passengers than July 2023, our busiest month in airport history.

CONSTRUCTION UPDATES

In February, the airport announced its first major project of a multi-year growth initiative, the $181 million Parking Garage Expansion Project. When finished, the garage will be six stories, add 3,500 parking spots, and provide a new operating location for rental car agencies.

To begin site work for the new garage, the airport closed over 700 parking spaces in the Long Term Lot. With this closure, we officially opened Economy Lot C, which added over 1,000 spaces to help offset the parking need. However, with the new flights and larger aircraft arriving this summer, this additional parking lot isn’t enough to sustain the airport throughout the parking garage expansion project. To reduce the parking deficit, the airport is working to add more spots to Economy Lot C and looking for other existing parking alternatives to provide passengers with parking spaces.
